Exposure to allergens such as pollen, grass, and other airborne particles can result in seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inflammation of the conjunctiva, also known as conjunctivitis, can be induced by coming into contact with makeup, eye drops, or other substances that irritate the conjunctiva. This condition is called contact dermatoconjunctivitis. Allergic reactions occur when these substances come into contact with the skin. Symptoms usually appear within two to four days after contact with the eyes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Massive conjunctivitis with giant papillaries is a common side effect of contact lens usage. Wearing contact lenses can be uncomfortable for some people, and the discomfort and redness can worsen over time. Improper hygiene with contact lenses, their solutions, and cases can lead to eye infections. Large papillary conjunctivitis can develop after eye surgery if hard contact lenses are continued to be worn (GPC).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Indoor allergens like dust, mold spores, or pet dander can cause perennial allergic conjunctivitis that continues throughout the year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Inflamed eyes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Watery or white, stringy mucus<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Redness of the eyes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sneezing and a runny or itchy nose can also occur as side effects.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Diagnosis<\/strong><\/p>\n

During your visit, your doctor will perform an eye exam and ask about any past allergies. Conjunctivitis can be identified by redness and tiny bumps on the eyelids and in the white of the eye. Your doctor may also order one of the following tests:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Allergy skin test: Allergens are placed on the patient’s skin, and the doctor observes the reaction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Blood test: To check for antibodies against specific allergens.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Conjunctival tissue scraping: To analyze white blood cells, especially eosinophils.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n

Treatment options for allergic conjunctivitis include:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Applying a cold compress to reduce swelling<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Immunotherapy for allergies<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Ophthalmic or oral antihistamines (over-the-counter or prescription)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
