Subungual Hematoma (Toenails)

Understanding bruising and blood buildup under the toenail after injury or pressure.

What is a Subungual Hematoma?

Did you injure your toe and notice dark discoloration under the nail? Learn what a subungual hematoma is and how it’s treated.
A subungual hematoma occurs when blood collects under the toenail after trauma, such as stubbing the toe, dropping a heavy object, or wearing tight shoes. It causes pain, pressure, and discoloration. Most mild cases heal naturally, but larger hematomas may need medical drainage to relieve discomfort.
