What is Tuberculosis?

It is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which mainly affects the lungs but also other parts.

Causes and Risk Factors

  • Inhaling airborne droplets from an infected person
  • Living in crowded or poorly ventilated conditions
  • Weak immune system (HIV, malnutrition, chronic illness)
  • Travel or immigration from countries with high TB prevalence
  • Ages below 5 or above 65 years

Diagnosis and Tests

  • Physical exam to check your symptoms
  • Tuberculin skin test (Mantoux test) or IGRA blood test
  • Sputum tests for acid-fast bacilli and culture
  • Chest X-ray to detect lung involvement
  • CT scan for extrapulmonary TB (brain, bones, etc.)

Treatment Options

  • 6-month course of antibiotics
  • Directly Observed Treatment, Short course (DOTS) for adherence
  • Isolation in initial stages to prevent transmission
  • Regular follow-up and testing
  • Nutrition and immunity support during recovery
