Causes and Risk Factors

High urinary concentration of stone-forming salts
Dehydration
Diet high in sodium or animal protein
Family history
Certain metabolic disorders

Diagnosis and Tests

Noncontrast CT scan (gold standard)
Ultrasound (if CT contraindicated)
KUB X-ray for radiopaque stones
Urinalysis and stone analysis
Serum calcium, uric acid, and electrolytes

Treatment Options

Pain control (NSAIDs, opioids)
Alpha-blockers (tamsulosin) to facilitate passage
Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)
Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy for large stones
