What are Kidney Stones?

Causes and Risk Factors

  • High urinary concentration of stone-forming salts
  • Dehydration
  • Diet high in sodium or animal protein
  • Family history
  • Certain metabolic disorders

Diagnosis and Tests

  • Noncontrast CT scan (gold standard)
  • Ultrasound (if CT contraindicated)
  • KUB X-ray for radiopaque stones
  • Urinalysis and stone analysis
  • Serum calcium, uric acid, and electrolytes

Treatment Options

  • Pain control (NSAIDs, opioids)
  • Alpha-blockers (tamsulosin) to facilitate passage
  • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)
  • Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy
  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy for large stones
