Amniotic Membrane Placement

Natural biologic graft to heal the ocular surface and reduce inflammation.

What is Amniotic Membrane Placement?

Amniotic membrane placement uses a processed human amniotic membrane to promote corneal and conjunctival healing. It can be applied as:

  • Sutureless ring device (e.g., PROKERA®): A membrane clipped into a soft ring that rests on the eye like a large contact lens.
  • Sutured/adhesive graft: The membrane is trimmed and secured to the ocular surface for larger defects.
The membrane contains natural antiinflammatory and antiscarring factors that support epithelial regrowth.

What to expect after Amniotic Membrane Placement?

  • Mild foreignbody sensation or blurry vision while the ring/graft is in place
  • Use of antibiotic/lubricating drops and protective shield
  • Ring device typically remains for 3–7 days; sutured grafts dissolve or are removed as healing occurs
  • Followup visits to monitor healing and adjust drops

Why is it performed?

  • To treat persistent epithelial defects, corneal ulcers, or chemical burns
  • To reduce inflammation and scarring after pterygium or other surface surgery
  • To manage severe dry eye disease or StevensJohnson–related surface disease

Risks and Considerations

  • Temporary blurred vision and irritation
  • Rare infection or displacement of the device
  • Possible membrane intolerance requiring early removal

Early detection is important for managing the condition and preventing further complications.
