Minimally invasive camera-assisted surgery to diagnose and treat ankle problems.

Minimally invasive camera-assisted surgery to diagnose and treat ankle problems.

What is Ankle Arthroscopy?

Ankle arthroscopy uses a small camera (arthroscope) and miniature instruments inserted through 2–3 tiny incisions around the ankle. Techniques include:

  • Diagnostic inspection & synovectomy: Removing inflamed lining.
  • Debridement of bone spurs/loose bodies: For impingement or arthritis.
  • Cartilage repair: Microfracture or drilling for osteochondral lesions.
  • Ligament evaluation/repair assistance.
Done under regional or general anesthesia as an outpatient.

What to expect after Ankle Arthroscopy?

  • Soft dressing and small waterproof bandages
  • Elevation and icing for the first 48–72 hours
  • Protected weight-bearing with crutches or a boot for 1–2 weeks (varies by procedure)
  • Mild pain and swelling for 1–3 weeks
  • Early range-of-motion exercises followed by strengthening
  • Return to desk work in 3–7 days; sports in 4–10 weeks depending on repair
  • Follow-up visit at 10–14 days for suture removal
  • Seek care for fever, increasing pain, drainage, or numbness

Why is it performed?

  • To treat chronic ankle pain, impingement, or synovitis
  • To address cartilage injuries (osteochondral defects)
  • To remove loose bodies or bone spurs
  • To aid diagnosis when imaging is inconclusive

Risks and Considerations

  • Infection, bleeding, or blood clots
  • Nerve or vessel irritation
  • Persistent stiffness or pain if arthritis is advanced
  • Need for further surgery in complex lesions

Early detection is important for managing the condition and preventing further complications.
