Plantar Fasciitis Surgery

Surgical release to reduce chronic heel pain when conservative care fails.

Plantar Fasciitis Surgery

What is Plantar Fasciitis Surgery?

Plantar fasciitis surgery is considered after 6–12 months of unsuccessful nonoperative treatment. Techniques include:

  • Partial plantar fasciotomy: Releasing a portion of the fascia to reduce tension.
  • Gastrocnemius recession: Lengthening tight calf muscle to decrease stress on the heel.
  • Endoscopic release in select cases.
Typically performed as an outpatient under regional or general anesthesia.

What to expect after Plantar Fasciitis Surgery?

  • Protective boot or post-op shoe with limited weight-bearing initially
  • Elevation and ice to control swelling for several days
  • Gradual return to full weight-bearing over 2–4 weeks
  • Physical therapy for flexibility and strengthening of the calf and foot
  • Soreness at the arch or calf for several weeks; improves with rehab
  • Return to desk work in 1–2 weeks; sports in 6–10 weeks depending on procedure
  • Notify provider for fever, worsening pain, or numbness

Why is it performed?

  • To relieve chronic heel pain unresponsive to orthotics, therapy, and injections
  • To restore mobility and activity levels

Risks and Considerations

  • Over‑release causing arch instability (rare)
  • Nerve irritation or heel numbness
  • Persistent pain if other causes are present
  • Infection or scar tenderness

Early detection is important for managing the condition and preventing further complications.
