What is Bunion Surgery?
Bunion surgery realigns the first metatarsal and big toe to correct the bony bump and toe deviation. Techniques include:
- Distal osteotomy (e.g., chevron): Cut near the metatarsal head with screw fixation.
- Proximal osteotomy or Lapidus procedure: Correct larger angles by stabilizing the base or midfoot.
- Soft-tissue balancing: Tendon/capsule releases and tightening.
Performed under regional or general anesthesia as an outpatient.
What to expect after Bunion Surgery?
- Protective boot or post-op shoe; crutches as needed
- Limited weight-bearing for 2–6 weeks depending on procedure
- Elevation and icing to reduce swelling; swelling may last several months
- Physical therapy for motion and gait training
- Return to desk work in 1–2 weeks; full activity in 8–12 weeks
- Final shoe comfort often improves over 3–6 months as swelling resolves
