What is Nail Excision?
Nail excision removes an ingrown, thickened, or damaged portion of the nail. Options include:
- Partial nail avulsion for ingrown edges.
- Total nail avulsion for severe deformity or fungal disease.
- Matrixectomy (chemical or surgical) to prevent regrowth of the problematic edge or the entire nail.
Performed with a digital nerve block anesthesia in the office.
What to expect after Nail Excision?
- Numbness for several hours; protective dressing applied
- Soaking instructions and topical care begin 24 hours after surgery
- Expect mild drainage for 1–2 weeks (longer if matrixectomy performed)
- Open-toe footwear initially; transition to regular shoes as comfort allows
- Over-the-counter pain medication usually sufficient
- Follow-up visit for wound check and dressing change
