Straightening of curled toes to relieve pain and improve alignment.

What is Hammertoe Correction Surgery?

Hammertoe surgery corrects a fixed bend in the toe joints that causes rubbing and pain. Techniques include:

  • PIP joint arthroplasty (removing a small piece of bone to relax the bend).
  • PIP joint fusion with a small implant or pin.
  • Flexor/extensor tendon lengthening or transfer to balance forces.
  • Correction of associated problems (corns, calluses, bunion).
Usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation.

What to expect after Hammertoe Surgery?

  • Post-op shoe or boot with protected weight-bearing for 2–4 weeks
  • Elevation and ice for swelling; pins (if used) removed in ~4–6 weeks
  • Soreness and swelling for several weeks; improve gradually
  • Return to desk work in 1–2 weeks; full activity in 6–8 weeks
  • Toe stiffness may persist slightly but pain is typically much improved
  • Call if redness, drainage, or increasing pain occurs

Why is it performed?

  • To relieve shoe irritation, corns, and toe pain
  • To correct deformity that limits walking or activity
  • To prevent progression and ulceration in high‑pressure areas

Risks and Considerations

  • Infection, recurrence, or over‑correction
  • Nerve irritation or numbness at the toe tip
  • Stiffness or floating toe
  • Blood clots (rare) or delayed healing

Early detection is important for managing the condition and preventing further complications.
