What is Hammertoe Correction Surgery?
Hammertoe surgery corrects a fixed bend in the toe joints that causes rubbing and pain. Techniques include:
- PIP joint arthroplasty (removing a small piece of bone to relax the bend).
- PIP joint fusion with a small implant or pin.
- Flexor/extensor tendon lengthening or transfer to balance forces.
- Correction of associated problems (corns, calluses, bunion).
Usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation.
What to expect after Hammertoe Surgery?
- Post-op shoe or boot with protected weight-bearing for 2–4 weeks
- Elevation and ice for swelling; pins (if used) removed in ~4–6 weeks
- Soreness and swelling for several weeks; improve gradually
- Return to desk work in 1–2 weeks; full activity in 6–8 weeks
- Toe stiffness may persist slightly but pain is typically much improved
- Call if redness, drainage, or increasing pain occurs
